U.S. Private Bank Notes – rare and diverse issues from the pre‑National Bank era

Private Bank Notes, also known as Obsolete Banknotes, were issued before 1863 by thousands of private banks, merchants, insurance companies, and railroads. Their designs are remarkably diverse, featuring allegorical scenes, locomotives, agricultural motifs, mythological figures, and regional symbols. Because many issuing institutions failed during 19th‑century financial crises, high‑grade originals are scarce and highly collectible today. Private bank notes remain one of the most artistic and historically rich areas of early American currency.
